Glossary for the Hanyu Impared
Hi everyone. My mother is the main reason why I'm including this little glossary of Chinese words. She insists that it's unfair to those who don't speak the language for me to include Mandarin without an explanation. I guess I see her point. So here are some of my more common words and phrases. Enjoy, and let me know if it needs amending.
bu (boo)- no
bai jiu (buy-jyo) - literally, white liquor; China's version of vodka/sake essentially.
hao (how) - good
Hebei Daxue (HeDa) (huhbay dashway [huh dah]) - Hebei University/HebU (where I work)
jiao zi (jow dzuh) - dumplings
laoshi (laow shur) - teacher
lao wai (laow why) - foreigner (silly image of a guy with a lonely planet guide and camera slung around his chest)
Mei guo (may gwoh) - America
Mei guo ren (may gwoh ren) - American (person)
meiyou (may yo) - none, have none, are none.
ni hao (knee how) - Hello
pengyou (pung yo) - friend
wai guo (why gwoh) - foreigner (no silly connotation)
zai jian (zy jyen) - goodbye
