Hello again.
So it's been an unforgivable amount of time since I last updated any form of china blog, but I beg your forgiveness-- anyone who may be out there reading. My hope is to have any time, means, internet loophole, to update this site when I arrive in China in approximately nine days. Then throughout my next year, of course, naturally.
However, I can see snags getting in my way. For now, stateside, I can only guess at how well I'll be able to keep this site. But enough about the technicalities of my own laziness.
What matters is, I'm back from China... but I'm going back.
The end of my semester was a whirlwind of emotions and grading and kittens and packing and unpacking and repacking and changing apartments and then not changing apartments. <insert manic noises>
I loved it all.
The fourth of July sticks out vividly in my mind, and we had a fun time with entirely too much grilled food on sticks, mini American flags, and of course Charlie bar shenanigans. (Which I hear, for any interested, is moving up in the world-- with possible changes in style and service. I will keep you posted.) The laowai also arranged a fabulous Baoding Bar Crawl, complete with bright red, yellow lettered tee shirts; 4 stops; and plenty of intoxicated fun. Photos, somewhat unfortunately available, on the book of face.
I returned to the US and A on July the 9th, very late, via Logan International Airport. Possibly my least favorite airport on the planet, but it works. I especially loved, via my layover in Toronto, that I went through US Customs Control.... that's right, in Canada. Oh, so... Canada really is America Light, then? So odd. All went fine though, and I've had a pretty nice time back.
At first it was all very strange, and I found myself, after a few emotional days of adjustment, just wanting to get on a plane back to Baoding immediately. Don't worry though, my turbulent waves of otherness and uncomfy calmed and after bouncing between NYC, Boston, the Berkshires, Upstate NY, and Central Mass, I've become really grateful that I had this summer to catch up with people, and places, and food. Mostly food. Though, remarkably, I somehow lost 7-10 lbs over the past year, and have not gained it back this summer despite my semi-decadence.
Well, it's getting late. We'll see when the next time I'm able to update will be. Hopefully soon. More hopefully in the middle kingdom.
I leave you with a taste of some summer adventures with Lauren... making dumplings in Boston. This is not instructive at all, and is a 4 part series as we both had to take time out to eat, drink beer, and be silly. Oh, right and cook. The rest may be found on my xanthropomorph youtube channel. Enjoy:
